Not a Network

A series of experiments investigates the naming of WiFi networks from two perspectives.

In «Public WiFi», network names are scanned with a custom built wifi recorder and juxtaposed with video recordings from the same locations. While predominantly encountering commercial and factory-setting network names, some appear to broadcast subliminal messages.

This observation is further explored in «Not a Network», which features a custom WiFi network that gradually performs poetry by altering its own name. «Not a Network» operates on a WiFi-enabled Arduino and is best experienced by scanning networks from an individual’s own device.
